Be aware, the Portland office tends to be busiest first thing in the morning, early in the week, and during the early part of the month. Consider planning to visit at other times.
2. Bring Necessary Documentation
When you call the SSA, be sure you to ask the representative what forms you will need to bring to your appointment. This will prevent you from having to come back again if you forget your documentation. Here are some documents you may need to bring: US birth certificate, US passport, Social Security Card, etc.
You can use this checklist to help you gather the information you need to apply. They request different documents depending on your circumstances. Remember that the SSA must see original document(s), or copies certified by the agency that issued them.

5 years agoHonestly, I had a remarkably pleasant experience this morning at the SS office. Got there 15 min early, and once the office opened, was in and out in about 10 minutes' time. The security guards were nice and had some friendly banter going. The gentleman who helped me with my name change was also friendly, positive and helpful. It might go downhill in the afternoon, but if you go in the AM, you'll probably have a pretty good experience!

5 years agoAfter reading all these reviews (and knowing how government bureaucracies are run), I was dreading going to the social security office to change my name after getting married. Got there just after 2pm on a Thursday and was greeted by very courteous security staff. I got my number, sat down, and was called up within 20 minutes. The employee who assisted me was extremely friendly and ensured me that he would get me on my way as quickly as possible (he was probably just happy that I had all my forms filled out and ID ready). I was at the window for 5-10 minutes, and then I was on my way. The whole process, from parking my car to walking out of the social security office, took 40 minutes, and everyone working there seemed really nice. Maybe I just happened to come during a lull, but my experience was way better than a lot of reviews led me to believe it would be.
